A high-performance sheet extrusion line is composed of several critical sub-systems, each designed to optimize heat transfer, shear rates, and pressure stability.
Consistent sheet properties start with dosing accuracy. Gwell utilizes multi-component gravimetric dosing systems that continuously measure the weight of polymer pellets, additives, color masterbatch, and regrind. This prevents variations in viscosity, maintaining uniform color distribution and mechanical properties throughout production runs.
The extruder screw is the heart of the system. For thermal-sensitive polymers like PVC, low-shear conical twin-screw configurations are utilized to prevent localized overheating and degradation. In contrast, for polymers like PP, PS, and PET, co-rotating twin screws or specialized barrier single screws are designed with intensive mixing sections. Bimetallic barrels with tungsten carbide coatings are also standard, extending screw service life when processing abrasive mineral-filled compounds or post-consumer regrind.
Once molten polymer exits the T-die, it enters the three-roll calendering stack. The arrangement of the rollers (vertical, inclined, or horizontal) is selected based on polymer viscosity and thickness specifications. These rolls are ground to a mirror finish and feature internal spiral flow channels, ensuring even heat transfer across the roll face. This rapid, controlled cooling prevents internal stresses, keeping the sheet flat during downstream cutting.
