The material is highly hygroscopic; moisture levels exceeding 0.02% will cause rapid hydrolytic degradation at elevated processing temperatures, leading to cosmetic bubbling, structural embrittlement, and a significant drop in physical properties. Traditional lines rely on intensive, energy-heavy desiccant pre-drying systems.

Modern co-extrusion technology has transformed this landscape. Advanced systems integrate multi-vented twin-screw systems or dry-free vacuum degasification setups. By executing deep vacuum devolatilization directly within the extruder barrel, processing lines bypass the pre-drying phase entirely, cutting energy consumption by up to 35% while protecting the polymer chains from thermal degradation.

PETG Sheet Extrusion Line: Mechanical Specification

Deep-dive into the raw mechanical configuration that ensures micro-level precision.

1. Screw and Extruder Design

The extruder is the core of the line. GWELL systems utilize high-output Single Screw Extruders with 30:1 to 33:1 L/D ratios, or co-rotating twin-screw units customized with low-shear screw configurations. High-shear screw profiles must be avoided to prevent shear-induced degradation of the copolyester chains, which causes yellowing and loss of toughness.

For vented systems, high-efficiency dry-type vacuum pumps pull up to 0.1MPa of vacuum directly at the barrel vent. This active degasification system extracts moisture and residual monomer volatiles, allowing direct feeding of un-dried PETG virgin pellets or scrap flakes without sacrificing optical clarity.

2. Calendering and Cooling System

To achieve high gloss and flat surfaces, GWELL uses a heavy-duty three-roll calender system. The rolls are ground to a mirror finish and internally engineered with spiral flow channels for uniform heat transfer. We utilize oil or pressurized water temperature controllers to maintain individual roll temperatures within ±1°C.

Precise temperature calibration prevents internal stresses within the cooling PETG sheet. This is critical for post-processing applications like thermoforming and die-cutting, ensuring the sheets do not warp or crack during subsequent manufacturing.

3. Multi-Layer Co-Extrusion (A/B/A & A/B/C)

To manage material costs, manufacturers often produce multi-layer structures. A feedblock distributes recycled PETG or cheaper PET variants into the core layer (B), encapsulated by virgin optical-grade PETG skin layers (A).

Our feedblocks deliver clean layer interfaces, ensuring the multi-layer sheet retains the scratch-resistance and printability of pure PETG, while utilizing recycled materials in the center to reduce costs.

4. Smart Automation & Gauging Controls

An integrated PLC system manages the entire line, featuring closed-loop control of temperatures, line speeds, and melt pressures. An online thickness gauge (using beta-ray or laser sensors) continuously scans the sheet width.

If a thickness deviation occurs, the control system adjusts the thermal bolts on the automatic T-die, bringing thickness profiles back in tolerance without manual operator intervention.

Why is precise temperature control critical for PETG extrusion?
PETG is highly sensitive to thermal degradation. If the melt temperature rises too high or experiences prolonged residence time, the polymer chain breaks down, causing discoloration (yellowing) and reduced impact resistance. Precise control across the barrel zones and calender rolls prevents internal stresses and maintains optical clarity.
Can GWELL PETG sheet lines process post-consumer recycled (PCR) flakes?
Yes. GWELL PETG extrusion systems can be configured with co-rotating twin-screw extruders and multi-vented degasification zones designed to run high percentages of PCR PETG or APET scrap. The venting design extracts moisture and contaminants, allowing you to feed recycled material directly without pre-drying.
What is the advantage of a multi-layer (A/B/A) co-extrusion structure?
An A/B/A structure allows manufacturers to sandwich a core layer (B) containing up to 50-70% recycled flakes or cost-effective PET between outer skin layers (A) of virgin optical-grade PETG. This reduces overall raw material costs while keeping the surface properties, printability, and clarity of virgin copolyester.
How does the automated T-die control thickness variations?
GWELL automated T-dies work in tandem with an online thickness scanner. When the scanner detects a localized thickness variation across the sheet width, it sends a signal to thermal expansion bolts on the T-die. These bolts heat or cool to adjust the die gap, bringing the sheet back in tolerance automatically.
