Learn MorePolycarbonate (PC) is recognized as one of the most versatile engineering polymers available. It offers optical clarity, thermal stability, and impact resistance. Because of this, it is widely used in automotive glazing, security barriers, electronic screens, and modern construction materials. To produce these high-performance sheets, advanced extrusion machinery is required.
Polycarbonate processing requires a clear understanding of its rheological behavior. Unlike commodity polymers like PE or PP, amorphous PC has a high melt viscosity, which requires precise shear management and heating control. If the melt temperature is incorrect, the molecular structure can degrade, causing visual flaws, yellowing, and lower impact resistance. GWELL designs custom-engineered barrier screws and drying equipment to prevent these issues, ensuring consistent performance during extrusion.
When used outdoors, polycarbonate sheets need protection from solar radiation. To achieve this, co-extrusion technology is used to apply a UV-protective coating to the sheet. This system requires highly accurate flow regulation and a feedblock that distributes the thin protection layer evenly across the main substrate. The GWELL co-extrusion system maintains consistent layers with tolerances as tight as +/- 2%, helping extend the outdoor lifespan of the sheets.

Polycarbonate is highly sensitive to moisture at processing temperatures. To prevent bubble formation and maintain impact strength, the raw material is dried down to a moisture content of less than 0.02% using desiccant dryers before feeding into the extruder.
By co-extruding a concentrated UV absorber layer onto one or both sides of the sheet, we protect the underlying substrate from sun degradation. This co-extrusion layer extends the life of the sheet while reducing total additive costs.
Calendering rolls shape the sheet and define its surface finish. Precise temperature control ensures even cooling across the width of the sheet, preventing internal stresses that can cause warping or uneven thickness.
We build our optical lines with high-purity components, including custom-designed barrier screws, dust-controlled enclosures, and polished chrome rolls. These design choices help minimize shear stress, contamination, and surface imperfections.
